Health Magazine’s recent findings on the best superfoods for women included quite a few interesting surprises.  Health consulted with a team of experts including David L. Katz, MD, MPH from Yale University School of Medicine, and Roshini Rajapaksa, MD Medical Expert from Health Magazine among others.

Here are more of the top superfoods that women should be consuming on a regular basis.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil -- You may have already heard how olive oil is good for your hearth and longevity.  After all, it is a staple of the Mediterranean diet.  Health Magazine’s experts point out that olive oil can also prevent against Alzheimer’s disease.  Always make sure that you choose the extra virgin olive oil.

Dark Chocolate -- There are so many reasons that dark chocolate is good for women.  It is full of antioxidants, which fight against free radical damage.  Dark chocolate is also loaded with magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc.  Be sure to opt for dark chocolate, and avoid candy bars, which are mostly packed with sugar and artificial ingredients.

Greek Yogurt -- Most people don’t think of choosing Greek yogurt over regular yogurt.  However, according to Health Magazine, Greek is a better choice for women.  One reason for this is that Greek yogurt has nearly twice as much protein as regular yogurt.  Additionally, Greek yogurt has ¼ of the calcium that is recommended for women per day.  Yogurt is also high in probiotics, which help with digestion and can boost immunity.

Health Magazine also gives high marks to its runner-ups.

Almonds -- Almonds can contribute to weight loss, and they also reduce cholesterol levels.

Eggs -- Eggs are full of protein and rich in Vitamin D and A.  The choline in eggs has also been shown to be beneficial for brain health.

Green Tea -- Green tea is a beverage that has many health benefits.  It has been shown to fight diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Kefir -- Like yogurt, Kefir is full of probiotics, protein and calcium.

Lentils -- Lentils are another useful protein source.  They also are high in fiber and full of antioxidants.

Pumpkin Seeds -- When you are choosing nuts, opt for seeds too.  Pumpkin seeds are a great addition to the diet.  They have protein, zinc, selenium and magnesium.  Pumpkin seeds also have been shown to fight heart disease and depression.

Quinoa -- Quinoa can be eaten in place of rice, and it is high in protein. Quinoa is particularly good for women because it is high in manganese, which fights PMS.  It also contains minerals that are good for bones.

Other top choices recommended for women are raisins, sweet potatoes, tart cherries, tomatoes, soybeans, spinach, and organic milk.
