Cancer is a disease that takes the lives of millions of Americans each year.  Poor diet, lack of exercise and unhealthy lifestyle elements are the major culprits responsible for approximately 65 percent of cancer deaths, according to a Harvard University School of Public Health study.

The good news is that the risk of developing cancer can be significantly reduced by adopting a healthy lifestyle, which includes consumption of anti-cancer foods and eliminating processed refined foods like white flour and refined sugar, saturated fats and alcohol.

Here are my top 5 food recommendations for cancer defense:

  1. Tomatoes - Aside from being a great source of vitamin C, tomatoes are an excellent source of the phytochemical lycopene -which has shown to shield against cancers of the lungs, cervix, prostate and mouth. A study published in the December 1995 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute showed a 45-percent reduced risk of prostate cancer in men who consumed ten of more servings of tomatoes or tomato-based foods per week than in men who didn't. Consuming cooked tomatoes instead of raw tomatoes has been shown to more than double the effectiveness of lycopene

  2. Blueberries - This superfood contains a compound known as pterostilbene, which is a natural antioxidant that fights free radicals that cause cancer. Blueberries are also a great source of flavanoids, which have shown to shield against several cancers. They may also improve balance, coordination and short term memory, according to a study published in the Journal of Neuroscience.

  3. Red Cabbage, Red Beets - Aside from being a great source of calcium, recent research indicates that red cabbage, red beets as well as broccoli, cauliflower, kale and brussel sprouts are rich in anti-cancer flavonoids.

  4. Spinach - Aside from being a great source of vitamin C, as well as folic acid, spinach has been found to lower lung cancer, colon cancer and breast cancer rates.

  5. Garlic - (this is one of my personal favorites) - Studies have proven time & time again that garlic is a food that promotes overall health. By neutralizing carcinogens and slowing tumor growth, the sulphur compounds in garlic have been shown to shield against cancer. A recent Iowa Women's Health study showed that breast cancer was lowered by 32% in women who consume garlic.
