cocoa-beans

Researchers from the Georgetown University Medical Center have found that a chemical compound located in cocoa beans can actually slow the growth of cancer tumors and increase the speed they are eliminated. Men and women today love the saying that chocolate might be good for you and this is one study that supports this statement. This study was published recently online with Cell Cycle to promote and advertise their findings related to the chemical compound known as GECGC. This chemical compound showed the strongest results when tested on colon cancer cells where it cut the growth of tumors in half, also damaging most of the remaining cells.

What makes this new chemical compound derived from this natural source a prime candidate for cancer treatment is that although it greatly affected the cancer tumors and cells, it does not affect the healthy cells within the body. This chemical so far seems to be safe. This of course makes perfect sense as it was naturally derived from cocoa beans, which have been used for years in the world of alternative medicine to treat a number of different health conditions.

Throughout the testing stages, several different lines of cancer cells and tumors were tested. These tests found that colon cancer, cervical cancer and leukemia tumors were all sensitive to GECGC. On the other hand there were cancer lines that resisted this natural treatment including prostate cancer and ovarian cancer. The head of the study states that this data is extremely promising and based on the strong effects GECGC has on colon cancer this could very well be a new form of therapy for these cancer patients. This chemical compound from cocoa beans shows promising results when used to treat cancer cells and tumors that are fast growing and spreading naturally.

The researchers within this project are still not entirely sure how GECGC inhibits the growth and spreading of cancer cells and tumors but their hypothesis is that it blocks the connection between cancer cells as well as the internal signals. Just as with any new finding there is a great deal more research to be done before this natural way of healing is released as the new form of cancer treatment.

The Flavonoids and antioxidants within the many forms of cocoa can help reduce the risk of many different health conditions including:
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improve circulation
  • Improve your digestive system
This is just a small example of the many additional health benefits that can be taken advantage of through cocoa beans. Remember that the cocoa used within this study is not yet on the market, however the unsweetened powder form of cocoa is the form, which offers the highest levels of Flavonoids and antioxidants.
