Tuberculosis - Tuberculosis 2006

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by bacteria known as Mycobacterium tuberculosis that affects an estimated 10-15 million people in the US. While TB most commonly affects the lungs, any organ of the body can be involved with the disease.

A group of organisms referred to as atypical tuberculosis also exist which involve other types of bacteria that are in the Mycobacterium family. Most times, the disease is not caused by these organisms. Because they simply live alongside other bacteria in our bodies without causing damage, they are referred to a "colonizers." They can however cause an infection that sometimes mirrors typical tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis is typically spread by breathing infected air from a person with the disease. When a person who has a tuberculosis lung infection, coughs, sneezes or shouts, minute particles of infected sputum often shoot into the air. If another person inhales this sputum, they can become infected with tuberculosis bacteria. A person cannot become infected by just touching or making contact with an infected person.

There is a form of tuberculosis, however, that is transmitted by drinking unpasteurized milk. Related bacteria, called Mycobacterium bovis, cause this form of TB. Previously, this bacteria was a major cause of TB in children, but it rarely causes TB now since most milk is pasteurized (a heating process that kills the bacteria).

When a person inhales tuberculosis bacteria into the lungs, the result can be pneumonia. The local lymph nodes associated with the lungs may also become inflamed. In addition, TB can spread to other parts of the body until the immune system halts it by forming scar tissue around the TB bacteria and isolates it from the rest of the body. When this occurs, the infection is contained in an inactive state and the person infected typically has no symptoms and cannot spread TB to other people.

In some cases, however, the TB bacteria breaks through the scar tissue because the body's immune system becomes weakened by things such as old age, the development of another infection or a cancer, or certain medications. This can result in a recurrence of the pneumonia and a spread of TB to other locations in the body such as the kidneys, bone, and lining of the brain and spinal cord.

Typical symptoms of TB include:

- Fatigue or Weakness

- Weight Loss

- Fever

- Night Sweats

If the infection in the lung becomes worse, further symptoms can include:

- Coughing

- Chest Pain

- Coughing up of Sputum

- Shortness of Breath

A strong immune system and a healthy diet are probably the best shields a person can have against tuberculosis.

Some beneficial supplements for treating tuberculosis naturally are:

Vitamin A (25,000 IU daily) and Vitamin E ( 400 - 800 IU daily) - Important for healing lung tissue.

Coenzyme Q10 (100 mg daily) - Aids in carrying oxygen to tissues for healing. I recommend using Q-absorb Co-Q10 by Jarrow Formulas for maximum absorption.

Colloidal Silver (take as directed on label), Ionic Silver (take as directed on label), and Zinc (50-80 mg daily) - Aid in healing lesions and enhances immune function.

Free Form Amino Acids (take as directed on label)- Needed for tissue repair and are rapidly absorbed by the body.

Garlic (2 capsules 3 times daily) - Natures antibiotic, helps control infection and stimulates the immune system.

Grape Seed Extract (take as directed on label) - Powerful antioxidant that enhances immunity.

L-Cysteine (500 mg daily) and L-Methionine (500 mg daily) - Aid in protecting the lungs and liver by detoxifying harmful toxins.

Selenium (200 mcg daily) - Shields against free radicals and promotes a healthy immune system.

Vitamin B Complex (100 mg of each major B vitamin 3 times daily) - Needed for the production of red blood cells and antibodies and aids in the utilization of oxygen.

Vitamin C with Bioflavanoids (5,000 - 20,000 mg daily in divided doses) - Strengthens immune response and promotes healing.

Echinacea and Pau d'Arco (take as directed on label) - Powerful antioxidants that provide blood cleansing and antibacterial properties.

Grapefruit Seed Extract (take as directed on label) - An antibacterial agent that supports healing.

Elcampane Root - Has decongestant and expectorant properties.
