Several people still believe that skipping breakfast is good for one’s health. Think about this. When you wake up from a good night’s sleep of at least seven hours, you have fasted for at least seven hours or more, depending on when you last had your evening meal. Even if your body is trying to balance your blood sugar levels while you are asleep, you are still starving your body. If you add zero meals during what should be breakfast, you have fully starved the cells in your body. What worries several people about eating breakfast is not just the inconvenience in preparing the meals, but the apprehension that the foods they are taking can add to the amounts of blood sugar in the body, which can lead to diseases, such as those obesity-related disease like diabetes and heart problems.

However, there are foods that are different from the usual ham, bacon, egg and white bread. These foods are packed with nutrients that can help the person stay healthy. Eating these foods during breakfast will not only give you the necessary nutrition your body needs, they can also keep you going and set your body in the right track to start the day. But these foods are not just to keep you productive throughout the day; they are also beneficial especially to those who want to maintain their weights. That way, they elude the risk of developing the diseases related to obesity and overweight problems.

  1. Sweet Potatoes

    Sweet potatoes are traditional mainstay in several Thanksgiving table. They are sweet starchy foods that are known to be full of nutrients for the body. There are more than 400 varieties of sweet potatoes. Some sweet potatoes are colored white, some are yellow, others have orange, and others are purple or pink. It is said that if this root vegetable is orange or yellow, they are rich in beta-carotene. A cup of baked sweet potatoes, or 114 grams of it, contains huge amounts of vitamin A. Just a cup of this root vegetable can already provide 438.1 percent of the daily value for vitamin A. Sweet potatoes is also rich in vitamin C and vitamin B6. It also contains minerals, such as manganese and potassium. It is considered a superfood because of its ability to regulate the body’s blood sugar. It may be due to the dietary fiber it contains or the glycemic index (GI) rating. But it is basically due to its ability to increase the body’s adinopectin. Adinopectin is a hormone that is being produced by the fat cells. This hormone can modify the metabolism of insulin. With increasing adinopectin in the body, blood sugar and insulin levels is regulated creating greater control with the blood sugar, an important requirement during the early part of the morning.

  2. Berries

    Among the fruits, berries are perhaps more beneficial for breakfast. There are different types of berries, from the most common strawberries, to blueberries, blackberries, cranberries and raspberries. They have varied nutritional content, but they are common for its antioxidant benefits. Berries are great when added in the morning cereals. Drinking juices made of berries is also healthy. Berries are low GI foods. Meaning, the rate at which the carbohydrates in berries have on the blood sugar levels of the body is low. Because of this, there is greater regulation of blood sugar when berries are taken generously, not just during breakfast, but also for the rest of the day. Aside from its ability to control blood sugar, berries are also perfect antioxidant. It is also low in calories yet high in water content.

  3. Cinnamon

    Cinnamon has long been considered as a spice and a medicine. It is usually used in powdered form or quill form. Two teaspoons of cinnamon can provide 45.5 percent of the daily value for manganese. It can also provide calcium and fiber needs of the body. Cinnamon can help in the blood clotting actions. It has antimicrobial properties, especially for those who experience Candida infections. The scent of cinnamon has also been studied and found out to have an effect on the brain, through improved attention and enhanced memory. As a breakfast superfood, cinnamon can help in controlling the blood sugar of the body by improving its ability to respond to insulin. There have been several studies conducted that proves that cinnamon can enhance the insulin-signaling pathway at the muscles, which will result to controlled blood sugar that can eventually help the body as it starts the day right.

  4. Yogurt

    Including yogurt in your breakfast meal is healthful. This fermented dairy product has loads of vitamins and minerals. A cup of yogurt can already provide 58 percent of the person’s required daily allowance for iodine. Yogurt is also rich in calcium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc and molybdenum. This tarry food also gives vitamin B2, B5 and B12 nutrients. Yogurt can boost the body’s immune system due to the activation of probiotics. It can also control the cholesterol levels, as well as the LDL and HDL. It can increase fat loss too, due to the calcium content for the food. Eating yogurt is just like burning fats without movements of the body. Several studies have shown that yogurt increases fat oxidation, which can result to weight loss. This was proven in an experiment conducted to a range of women who showed changes in fats, through burning, after every meal which includes yogurt.

  5. Oatmeal

    Large companies are advertising a lot about having a steamy bowl of oatmeal as a regular part of breakfast. Oatmeal is commonly found at many breakfast tables all over the world. They are nutritious food because of its high-manganese content, with selenium, phosphorus, zinc and magnesium. It is considered a breakfast superfood because of its ability to stabilize the blood sugar of the body through beta-glucan. In an experiment conducted, people who are given white rice or bread during breakfast is more likely to experience blood sugar rush than those who are given oatmeal, where blood sugar is stabilized. Starting the day with foods that stabilizes blood sugar is more likely to control their blood sugar throughout the day. This is particularly relevant to persons with diabetes.
