Sunburn - Sunburn 2007

The following regimen includes a safe, holistic approach to treating & preventing sunburn:

Soak for 30 minutes or more in an herbal bath containing six cups of chamomile tea or lavender oil added to lukewarm water. This will reduce the stinging and pain. You can also apply a salve containing calendula flowers and St. John's wort to bad burns as these herbs hold antiseptic properties that promote healing.

Many times people think that because the sun causes sunburn, they should avoid the sun altogether. This should not be the case. The sun itself is not the cause of sunburn, over exposure to UV light is. In fact, natural sunlight is one of the best ways to naturally stimulate the production of vitamin D in the body.

Moderation is key. You know your skin better than anyone else. If you burn easily, your time in the sun should be limited. If that's not an option for any reason, wear protective clothing. But whatever you do, do not wear sunscreen or sun block. Studies have shown chemicals in these products to be cancer causing themselves and the only reason why they continue to remain on the market is for the same reason prescription drugs do: because they generate profits.

If you still choose to wear sunscreen use a natural, non-toxic form of sunblock that's free of toxic chemicals such as Octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC), which is present in most commercial brands. I've found two brands that are made of natural ingredients and free of petrochemicals: “Natural Sun” by Aubrey Organics and “Caribbean Blue” by Natmed Limited.

The following supplements may also be beneficial:

Aloe Vera Gel - Very effective in treating any kind of burn. Gently apply a thin layer of the gel to the affected area and repeat every hour until the pain subsides.

Coenzyme Q10 (60 mg daily) - Increases the oxygen supply to the cells. I recommend the brand “Q-absorb” by Jarrow Formulas.

Colloidal Silver (apply topically as directed on label) - Prevents infection and promotes healing.

Dimethylglycine (DMG) (take as directed on label) - Increases tissue oxygenation.

Silica or horsetail (take as directed on label) - Provides silicon which is needed for tissue repair.

L-Cysteine (500 mg daily on empty stomach. Take with water or juice & never with milk) - Promotes healing of burns.

High-Potency Multivitamin and Mineral Supplement (take as directed on label) - Supplies all necessary nutrients.

Vitamin C with Bioflavonoids (10,000 mg & up in divided doses) - Needed for tissue repair and healing.

Primrose Oil - Needed for tissue healing.
