Reye's Syndrome - Reye's Syndrome 2007

For hundred’s of years, people have used aspirin to relieve the symptoms of everything from headaches to stomach cramps. What most people may not be aware of however, is the danger associated with giving this drug to children. Aspirin has been linked to a rare but serious illness that can affect the blood, liver and brain of children and teenagers recovering from a viral infection known as Reye’s syndrome.

In people with Reye's syndrome, the level of ammonia and acidity in the blood typically increases while the level of blood sugar drops. The liver may swell and develop fat deposits. The brain my also become swelled possibly resulting in emergency symptoms such as seizures or convulsions. In some cases, a coma and brain death can occur with Reye’s syndrome.

The signs and symptoms of Reye's syndrome typically follow a viral infection such as influenza or chickenpox in about a weeks time. Typically, the child will appear to be recovering from a viral illness, and then suddenly become much more seriously ill.

Children first tend to exhibit these signs:

- Persistent nausea and vomiting

- Unusual sleepiness or lethargy

- Disoriented behavior

- Combative behavior

The onset of Reye's can be rapid. Signs and symptoms may worsen within hours.

As Reye's syndrome progresses, the following signs and symptoms may occur:

- Weakness or paralysis in extremities

- Loss of consciousness

- Seizures or convulsions

These signs and symptoms require emergency treatment.

Reye's syndrome tends to occur in otherwise healthy children about a week after common viral infections.

The condition can also follow an ordinary upper respiratory infection such as a cold. Experts are still unsure of the exact reason, but using aspirin to treat a viral illness or infection seems to trigger the condition in children.

Children most affected are between ages of 4 and 12.

Following the regimen below can help treat & prevent Reye’s syndrome safely and naturally:

Avoid giving aspirin or products that contain aspirin to anyone younger than 20 years of age.

If a person exhibits symptoms of Reye’s syndrome, they should go to an emergency room as soon as possible.

Always check herb and vitamin use with your child’s health care practitioner prior to administering them.

The supplements listed below may also be beneficial:

Branched-chain amino acid complex (take as directed on label) - Prevents against muscle depletion.

Flaxseed Oil (take as directed on label) - Supplies essential fatty acids.

Garlic (take as directed on label) - Increases energy and enhances immune function. I recommend the brand Kyolic from Wakunaga, which is a powerful and odorless organic garlic supplement.

Lecithin Granules (1 tbsp 3 times daily) - Supplies choline, which helps with nerve impulse transmission and energy production.

L-Methionine plus Glutathione (take as directed on label) - Powerful antioxidants that protect and detoxify the liver.

Vitamin A (5,000 IU daily) - Helps formulate healthy skin cells plus carotenoid complex (15,000 IU daily) - Used by the body to make vitamin A as needed.

Vitamin E (400 IU daily) - Shields against free radical damage.

Vitamin B Complex (50 - 100 mg of each major B vitamin daily) - Supports healing.

Alfalfa, Milk Thistle and Pau d’Arco - Herbs that help rebuild and strengthen the liver.

Ginger and Peppermint - Help relieve nausea.
