Ringing with Radiation

Right around this time last year, I wrote an article about cell phones, imploring readers to limit their use for the sake of their sleep health.

This year, I’m asking readers to limit cell phone use for the sake of their health in general.

The fact that cell phones emit radiation is not some new fangled conspiracy theory.  Indeed, cell phones must emit radiation for them to even work, as cell phones operate on radio waves, which are forms of radiation.

But the question has been whether or not they emit enough radiation to adversely affect a person’s health.

The answers vary depending on who you ask, but the Environmental Working Group’s answer has been unequivocal – yes!

As you may have seen in reports on ABC News and other nightly news programs, the EWG has compiled a list of cell phones that emit the largest amounts of radiation.

I’ll get to this list in a moment, but before I do, permit me to explain why you should take their list seriously.

Again, there’s no disputing cell phones emit radiation.  But there’s nothing but disputes over just how much radiation they emit, none of them conclusive. Personally, I tend to side with the cautious crowd, mainly because of the potential implications.

We’re surrounded by radiation emitters every day.  Whether it’s from electronic devices like computers, kitchen appliances like microwaves, or nature devices like the sun, we’re surrounded by them.

The difference between cell phones and other radiation emitters, though, is that we’re actually putting a radiation emitter directly to our heads.  So however much radiation cell phones are emitting is magnified by the fact that they’re leading straight to our brain as we press them to our ears and mouths.

In light of this, I use my cell phone’s speaker function regularly.  “Regularly” is overstating, as I rarely use my cell phone (I have over 7,000 unused minutes at present), but when I do use it, the speaker phone button gets pressed.  You ought to consider a cell phone with speaker phone capability if it doesn’t have it already.

Symptoms of radiation poisoning from cell phone use may be as minor as a headache or as serious as a tumor, as David Gutierrez reports from Natural News.  The Environmental Working Group has uncovered some similarly disturbing findings, like tumors forming on the brain and salivary glands after prolonged use.

I’m not calling for an all-out ban on cell phone use.  Just be aware of how long you’re using it.  If you’re engaging in conversations that last more than an hour – and this is happening nearly every day – you’re probably overusing.  If you still can’t pry yourself away from your cell phone, consider purchasing the following cell phones, as they emit the least amount of radiation:

  1. Samsung Impression
  2. Motorola RAZR V8
  3. Samsung SGH-t229
