Rabies - Rabies 2007

Rabies is a serious viral disease that affects the central nervous system. Generally, rabies is spread through the saliva of animals that are infected. And most times, a bite from the infected animal is the method in which a person becomes infected.

Once a person becomes infected, the virus spreads from the muscle to the peripheral nerves to the spinal cord and brain.

Risk of rabies exposure in the US is raised when a person comes into contact with a wild animal. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports most cases each year occur in wild animals, including raccoons, skunks and foxes. More recently, infected bats have been the cause for many cases in people in the United States. Because most domestic pets are vaccinated against rabies, they account for only a small percentage of reported rabies cases.

Every year, rabies takes the lives of a few people in the United States. Most times, deaths occur because the person didn't seek medical assistance. If you think you've been exposed to an animal with rabies, seek medical assistance as soon as possible.

Signs and symptoms of rabies typically appear within one to three months after exposure to the disease. Once symptoms appear, rabies is nearly always fatal as a result of breathing failure which often happens within a week after the appearance of signs and symptoms.

Early signs and symptoms of rabies in humans are general and not unique to the disease.

They may include:

- Fever

- Headache

- Malaise

As the disease progresses, signs and symptoms may include:

- Insomnia

- Anxiety

- Confusion

- Slight or partial paralysis

- Excitation

- Hallucinations

- Agitation

- Excessive salivation (hypersalivation)

- Difficulty swallowing

- Fear of water (hydrophobia) because of the difficulty in swallowing

The most common cause of rabies transmission is from the bite of a rabid animal. People can also contract rabies when saliva from an infected animal comes in contact with their eyes, nose, mouth or a wound but this is very rare. This can happen if you're licked by an infected animal.

Simply petting a rabid animal or coming into contact with the blood, urine or feces of a rabid animal doesn’t mean that a person is infected and doesn't indicate a need for treatment.

The following supplements may be beneficial in treating rabies naturally:

Vitamin C with Bioflavonoids (4,000 - 10,000 mg daily for 1 week, then reduce to 3,000 mg daily) - Fights infection.

Proteolytic Enzymes (take as directed on label) - Acts as an anti-inflammatory.

Colloidal Silver (take as directed on label) - Reduces the danger of infection.

Garlic (2 capsules 3 times daily) - Acts as a natural antibiotic. Kyolic by Wakunaga of America is my brand of choice.

L-Cysteine and L-Methionine (500 mg each daily for 2 weeks) - Powerful detoxifying agents.

Vitamin A (25,000 IU daily) - Powerful antioxidant that aids the immune system.

Vitamin B Complex (50 mg of each major B vitamin 3 times daily) - Aids in tissue oxidation and antibody production.

Echinacea, Goldenseal, Pau d’ Arco and Red Clover- Taken in tea form, are good for dog bites.

* Important note: The recommended doses are for those over age 18. Always check herb and vitamin use with your child’s health care practitioner prior to administering them.
