Psoriasis - Psoriasis 2006

Psoriasis is a condition that affects many people worldwide. It is defined as a non-contagious inflammatory skin disease characterized by recurring reddish patches covered with silvery scales. This condition which consists of dry, itchy skin can be caused my many different factors. Some of which are external to the body like dry air, forced heat from radiators, exposure to certain elements and use of harsh soaps when washing.

What most people do not know is that dry skin can also be the result of what's happening inside your body. The body must rid it self of unhealthy mechanisms in order to survive. Therefore, whenever you participate in activities that do not promote a healthy body, the body will react in a certain way. These reactions sometimes can consist of the body ridding itself of unwanted substances through the pores which can ultimately have a negative effect on the skin.

For example, dry skin can often be the result of an imbalance of fatty acid in the body. To prevent moisture loss in the skin, your skin cells need to have healthy cell membranes. These healthy cell membranes are also necessary to capture nutrients and keep toxins away. For this to happen, and to ensure that skin cells function correctly and stay strong, fatty acids are necessary. Therefore, lack of enough of the right kinds of fats can result in dry skin. In most cases, this imbalance of fatty acids takes place when a person consumes too many omega-6 fats and not enough omega-3 fats.

The omega-6 fats are found in products such as corn, soy, and sunflower oil. Ideally, the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 should be 1:1. The reality however, is that the ratio today averages between 20:1-50:1 which is pretty dangerous to say the least. Ratios such as these can lead to dry skin in quite a lot of people.

So the first way to remedy this problem is to increase the intake amount of omega-3 fats which can be found in walnuts, flaxseed and most importantly fish. And the second, is to reduce the intake of omega-6 fats which can be found in beef, store bought meats and hydrogenated vegetable oils.

Two great choices for preventing dry skin are fish oil and coconut oil. Fish oil contains high levels of the best omega-3. In its pure form, the mercury risk of fresh fish is not present in fish oil. Coconut oil not only provides your body with the right fatty acids when you ingest it but it's incredibly soothing and healing qualities allow you to apply it directly to your skin instead of lotion.

Psoriasis can also be the result of malfunctions within the body which can occur in many parts of the body such as the digestive system and the liver. Hydrochloric acid is a great choice in malfunction prevention because it improves protein digestion. When proteins are not digested properly, guess how the body rids itself of them? That's right, through the skin. In His book "Staying Healthy with Nutrition: The Complete Guide to Diet and Nutritional Medicine, Celestial Arts", Elson M. Haas M.D. stated hydrochloric acid is available primarily as betaine hydrochloride. When a 5–10 grain (1 grain = 64 mg.) tablet is taken before, during, or after meals, it should help proteins break down into peptides and amino acids and fats into triglycerides. Glutamic acid hydrochloride is used sometimes in formulas, but this amino acid is only mildly acidic and does not work as well as betaine hydrochloride. Betaine may be used alone, in supplements, or along with pepsin or other digestive agents.

Aside from the wrong foods, toxins can be another reason why you may be suffering from psoriasis so my recommendation here is do your best to eliminate toxins in the body through the bowels and urinary tract, rather than through the skin. As always, you must do this safely and naturally.

Milk thistle is known to improve liver detoxification and reduce cellular proliferation. Since the Greco-Roman times, milk thistle (Silybum marianum) has been used an herbal remedy for a variety of ailments, most of them pertaining to the liver. In the late 1800's and early 1900's milk thistle seeds were used to relieve such conditions as congestion of the liver, spleen, and kidneys. Recently, several scientific studies have shown that active substances in milk thistle (particularly silymarin) protect the liver from damage caused by viruses, toxins, alcohol, and certain drugs such as acetaminophen (a common over the counter medication used for headaches.)

I also recommend consuming a whole food supplement that contains chlorella and spirulina, such as "Super Green Formula" by Garden of Life. Chlorella and spirulina are among the 3 algae that are commonly available in the marketplace today. Chlorella contains the highest chlorophyll content of any known plant. Aside from that, it offers a host of advantages that are not found in other algae or grasses because of its tough cell wall. Chlorella's cell wall has been shown to eliminate toxins, pesticides, and heavy metals from the body. This cell wall also has a characteristic which is an important component in immune function which is the ability to induce interferon production in the body.

Spirulina is of blue-green color which is the source of much of its cancer-prevention abilities. Similar to tree leaves, spirulina also obtains its color from chlorophyll. Alan Keith Tillotson's "One Earth Herbal Sourcebook," states the high levels of chlorophyll in spirulina may explain its ability to stop cancer colonies from forming. As Tillotson writes, "Foods and herbs that contain high levels of chlorophyll show pharmacological evidence of cancer prevention , perhaps because pigments in green vegetables (and algae bind with and thus stimulate excretion of cancer-causing chemicals." The body's naturally occurring cancer cells won't be able to spread and develop into symptomatic cancer when they are stopped before they can form colonies.

Both chlorella and spirulina are excellent alternative choices for eliminating the body of toxins so that they don't choose the skins pores as their way out.
