All-natural supplement may reduce obesity risk

Extramel Delivers Extreme Results

I’ll be the first to admit, even though I’m a staunch advocate of supplementing for weight loss, a lot of the supplements and pills on the market today that call themselves “weight loss pills” are a lot of hullabaloo.  They don’t do anything but make you think you’re losing weight (the fine print of these pills always says that you should use them in association with diet and exercise; gee, I wonder why?).

But every once in a while, a supplement will reach the market that actually has some bark to its bite, some hustle behind its muscle.  One of these supplements is called Extramel, and a scientific study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry indicates that it can serve as an obesity deterrent by helping to eliminate the common conditions that result from obesity.

The Vermontonian researchers – from the University of Montpelier, to be specific – supplemented four groups of hamsters with varying doses of Extramel over a seven month period.  Some had as little as .7 mg per day, while others had as much as 5.6 mg per day.  These four groups ate a high fat diet.

In addition to observing these four groupings, the researchers also observed a fifth hamster group, a group that ate a standard diet that did not supplement with the Extramel.

At the end of the 84 day observation study, the researchers found that those hamsters that supplemented with the highest dosage of Extramel yielded the most positive benefits – better than the group that ate a standard, lower fat diet.

And it wasn’t just with one aspect of obesity that the hamsters fed Extramel fared better.  It was across the obesity spectrum.  For instance, those that supplemented with 5.6 mg per day had a nearly 70 percent drop in triglyceride levels, a 35 percent drop in lipid production, a 25 percent drop in abdominal fat, and a 41 percent drop in insulin resistance!

A pretty impressive pill, no doubt.

What makes this super pill so, well, super, are of course the ingredients it contains – all-natural ingredients.  Extramel is composed entirely of melon extracts.  The extracts, primarily dismutase, is a highly potent antioxidant that helps spur the production of glutathione (glute-ah-THIGH-own), one of the body’s natural antioxidants that I briefly discussed in a previous posting.

Besides its role in promoting immune system function, glutathione also plays a key roll in reducing oxidative stress levels, something that goes hand in hand with obesity and metabolic syndrome.

As with all studies, more needs to be conducted on this one.  Always remember, nothing will ever replace the role of diet and exercise to lose weight.  But this study shows how truly impactful all-natural supplements can be, the emphasis being on all-natural.

I should mention that I’m in no way affiliated with Extramel nor am I paid to promote their product.  I’m simply advocating its usage based on my own research and the totality of supporting evidence from the aforementioned study.  Again, the study is published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry on their Web site (June 25,, 2009 issue).
