Jaundice is not a disease but rather a sign that can result from many other diseases. Jaundice is the yellowish coloring of the skin and whites of the eyes that is caused by increased levels of the chemical bilirubin in the blood. The level of bilirubin determines the color of the skin and eyes. A medium level of bilirubin level causes the skin and eyes to have a yellowish color. A high level results in a brown color.
Bilirubin is a yellow-brown substance that results from the breakdown of old red blood cells. The destroyed cells release hemoglobin, which is the iron-containing chemical in red blood cells that carries oxygen after the iron within it is removed. The chemical that remains in the blood after the iron is removed becomes bilirubin. Jaundice can be the result of a few things: One of the liver’s functions is to remove bilirubin from the blood. Jaundice occurs when the liver cannot do so because there is too much bilirubin being produced or there is a defect in the liver that prevents bilirubin from being removed from the blood, converted to bilirubin/glucuronic acid (conjugated) or secreted in bile. Another possibility is an obstruction of the flow of bile and bilirubin from the liver into the intestines. On rare occasion, jaundice can be caused by: - Tapeworm or Hookworm - Viral, Bacterial or Parasitic Infection - Tumor - Gallstone - Inflammation A small measure of jaundice is common in newborn babies and is not considered serious. The reason this happens is because a new baby’s liver is does not function to its full capacity to produce bilirubin. Most times, this case of jaundice will resolve itself. For cases that won’t resolve themselves, try a safe, alternative approach using: Coenzyme Q10 (take as directed on label) - Promotes tissue oxygenation and removes toxins from the body. Colostrum (take as directed on label) - Improves immune function and shields the liver. Grape Seed Extract (take as directed on label) - Assists the liver by removing toxins from the body. Vitamin C plus bioflavonoids (2,000 – 4,000 mg daily) – A potent antioxidant that aids in healing and acidifies the urine. L-Glutathione and L-Methionine (500 mg daily on an empty stomach with water or juice but never milk) - Work together to protect the liver. High Potency Multivitamin and Mineral Complex (take as directed on label) Mineral depletion is common in kidney disease. Some herbs that may be helpful include: Burdock Root and Red Clover - Aid in cleansing the blood. Oregano - Has been shown to be effective in relieving jaundice. Celandine, Chaparral and Dandelion - Cleanse the liver. Your diet should consist of raw vegetables and fruits for 1 week. When cooking, the spices coriander & turmeric should be used, as they both are good liver cleansers. With Jaundice, avoid alcohol at all costs. Alcohol places a huge strain on the liver and can intensify the condition.
