Exclusive Interview with Jay Robb, Founder of Jay Robb Enterprises

Frank Mangano: Hi Jay! First let me start by saying how truly excited I am to have you here with us today. I have been a fan of your products for quite some time now and I’m really anxious to start picking your brain.

So let’s get right down to business. Tell us a little about yourself and how exactly you got into the business of healthy foods?

Jay Robb: Thank you for your kind words Frank. I have known my destiny would be in the health and fitness field since I was 8 years old. I absolutely hated to get sick when I was a child because I couldn’t go outside and play. I got a terrible cold one year, right after Christmas, and it inhibited me from going outside to play so I vowed to find out why people get sick and to never be sick again! I knew at the time I always felt my best in the summer when I was swimming, eating more fresh fruit, and spending the most time in the sun, so that gave me a good start on the basic requirements needed to be healthy. But it wasn’t until I turned 25 that I seriously committed my life’s work to the field of health and fitness. I was suffering with a pre-diabetic condition that I later discovered was self-induced by the foods I was eating. So I consulted with a preventative medical physician, changed my diet, almost instantly restored my failing health, and the rest is history. Two years later I opened my first fitness club and have never looked back.

Frank Mangano: I’ve seen plenty of natural bars like yours on the market, yet very few if any have comparable taste. What do you attribute that to?

Jay Robb: Frank, our JayBars are made with organic nut butters and other choice organic ingredients including organic agave nectar. We combine these ingredients with whey protein to deliver a protein bar that is actually a “health bar” instead of a candy bar like many other bars on the market. And our YAMMIT! Bars are to die for…as you well know Frank as you confessed to me they are your favorite! Those are made with organic dried fruits, organic nut butters, and then we top each bar with dried sweet potato nuggets that offer a unique taste treat that is hard to beat. “A bar from Jay will make your day!”

Frank Mangano: What would you say are some key natural ingredients that you include in your recipes?

Jay Robb: We use 3 key ingredients in our JayBars, Organic nut butters, organic agave syrup, and whey protein. We are famous for having simple, natural ingredients in our products and our JayBars are no exception.

Frank Mangano: One of the best things I like about your products Jay is what's NOT in them! What would you say are some key ingredients to always leave out of your recipe’s and why?

Jay Robb: We are opposed to the use of artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, acesulfame-K, acesulfame potassium, and sucralose. We also avoid the use of hydrogenated oils and trans fat. Plus our bars contain NO gluten, casein, calcium caseinate, glycerin, maltitol, or artificial flavors or colors. In fact, we market our bars as “The NO JUNK JayBars”.

Frank Mangano: Are there some manufacture’s on the market who claim to have natural products but really don’t?

Jay Robb: The term “natural” is a very loose term in the health food industry. Refined white sugar is a “natural” foods, and so is enriched white bread. When we create a healthy bar we want it to contain as many organic ingredients as possible and we use sweeteners that are as natural as possible such as agave nectar which is a slow releasing carbohydrate that is rated low on the glycemic index. Many other manufacturers make their bars with sugar in a variety forms including “dried cane juice” (just a unique name for sugar), maltodextrin (cheap corn starch), and honey (natural but high glycemic), just to name a few. It also seems that many manufacturers are also lacing their bars with artificial sweeteners.

Frank Mangano: How can the consumer truly know if the product is made up of ingredients that are 100% natural?

Jay Robb: Always read labels and make sure you look at each ingredient. Be suspicious of words you can’t pronounce and look up any words you don’t know the mean. And if you see any of the ingredients that we at the Jay Robb Corporation are opposed to using in our products, don’t buy that product.

Frank Mangano: What is it that they should be looking for?

As many real foods as possible.
