Inflammation is a natural reaction from the body to infection or injury that is characterized by the affected tissues becoming warm and tender, swelled, reddened and in some cases painful. The damaged tissues become repaired through a process by which proteins called cytokines attack the threatening germ. Inflammation in excessiveness however, can cause harm to the body and lead to weight loss, immobility and a weakening of muscle tissue as well as a decreased ability to fight disease.

Some disorders characterized by specific areas of inflammation in the body include carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and bursitis among many others. Inflammation in the linings of the arteries may also contribute to cardiovascular disease. Inflammation can be triggered by a number of factors including infections, trauma, environmental toxins, drug overuse and free radical damage.

Inflammation can affect any tissue or organ in the body, both internal and external. In most cases, internal inflammation is caused by bacterial infection but disorders such as anemia, arthritis, asthma, allergies, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, osteoarthritis and peptic ulcer disease can cause internal inflammation as well.
