Infertility - Infertility 2006

In one year, 6.1 million women between the ages of 15-44 will have an impaired ability to have children and 9.2 million women will use infertility services. There will be 2.1 million couples that are infertile. In case my point is not clear, infertility is a pretty big issue for many men and women.

The sad fact is that many women are turning to prescription medications for answers. One of these meds in particular called Lupron isn’t even FDA approved for whatever that’s worth. This drug, which is manufactured by Tap Pharmaceuticals Inc.and is approved for treatment of men with advanced prostate cancer and for treatment of endometriosis and uterine fibroids. And nothing more!

A legal loophole exists however. Basically, once a drug is a approved by the FDA, doctors can use it for any purpose regardless of what specific indication it has. You heard me right. With an FDA approval, a drug can be prescribed by a doctor for any purpose. The more times this nonsense happens, the more acceptable it becomes in standard medical practice.

Lupron was designed to treat Endometriosis, which is a condition in which pieces of the lining of the uterus somehow wind up in other parts of the body. These pieces of endometrium respond to the menstrual cycle and bleed. When the blood cannot escape, it builds up and the result is the development of small or large painful cysts.

Lupron is a synthetic-like hormone that is believed to impact this process by suppressing the ovaries and temporarily interrupting estrogen output. Basically, it’s a drug-induced menopause.

This condition can cause infertility .The theory in treating infertility is that by shutting off the body's production of hormones IVF doctors can then induce hormonal preparations that can lead to multiple egg development. While that sounds great, there is zero evidence to support it and it’s pretty dangerous.

If that’s not enough to deter you from considering Lupron as a method to treat infertility, the side effects include:

Cardiac Arrhythmias

Dizziness

Swelling

Chest Pain

Depression and Confusion

Bone Pain

Extreme fatigue

Vision Loss

High Blood Pressure

Nausea

So now let’s talk about some healthy alternatives to treat infertility. For starters, let’s get back to basics by approaching the infertility issue with exercise and good nutritional habits.

According to says Liz Collins, N.D., a naturopathic doctor and co-owner of the Natural Childbirth and Family Clinic in Portland, Oregon, vitamin E can be helpful for both men and women in treating infertility. In one study that she performed giving just 100 to 200 international units (IU) of vitamin E a day to both partners increased fertility, she says.

Aside from balancing hormones, which is important in nourishing fertilized eggs, vitamin E is also a powerful antioxidant. This means that it helps control the damage caused by free-roaming, unstable molecules called free radicals which helps men greatly in the fertilization process. Did you know that almost half of infertile men have high levels of free radicals in their semen?

Many supplements are available for men to improve both sperm counts and sperm motility. These same supplements can also reduce the number of abnormal sperm cells. Some of the most popular supplements are the antioxidants vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium and other nutrients such as zinc, arginine, and carnitine.

Vitamin E, selenium and vitamin C work pretty much the same way, by preventing free radical damage. In one small study, selenium and vitamin E supplements were given to infertile men for six months by researchers in Canada. As a result of the supplementation, the men showed significant increases in sperm motility, percentage of live sperm, and percentage of normal sperm cells. All three of these benefits by the way, diminished later when the men stopped taking them

Zinc is another great choice for infertile men because it can help increase sperm counts and improve sperm motility. Conversely, decreased productions of testosterone which can lead to impaired fertility can be the result of low zinc levels.

The amino acid, L-Arginine can be found in many foods as well as in the head of the sperm, which actually contains an exceptional amount of this nutrient. L-Arginine is essential for sperm production. Supplementing with L-arginine can not only increase the sperm count but it can improve the quality as well. Note: People who have herpes attacks (either cold sores or genital herpes) should not supplement with arginine because it stimulates the virus.

L-Carnitine is an amino acid that is essential for normal functioning of sperm cells. Research as shown that when the levels of L-Carnitine in the sperm cells are higher, the result is higher sperm count and motility.
