The Oregon grape can be found in three different species that thrive in particular weather climates. First is M. nervosa, a low growing plant adorned with holly. It is typically found in coastal forests with low elevations. Next is M. repens, a creeping plant that is native to dry areas such as Ponderosa pine ecosystems. Finally, there is M. aquifolium, which is the tallest of the Oregon grape plants. All produce brilliant yellow flowers and berries, and all are used for medicinal purposes. This stems back to the Oregon Trail, which gives the plant its name. The root bark in particular is beneficial to certain ailments, but the leaves can also be utilized.

The Oregon grape root is able to treat a wide variety of skin problems. Amongst the list is psoriasis. This herb is very efficient in the reducing and even preventing of skin lesions caused by psoriasis. It is also a proven remedy for the issue itself by slowing the unusual cell growth and reliving the inflammation associated with psoriasis. Oregon grape root can also cure acne, allergy related rashes and eczema. This is possible through the aiding of liver functions, which is where skin problems stem. By metabolizing wastes and toxins, the liver is healthy and these issues can be avoided.

This herb is beneficial beyond the skin. Research has proven it to effectively treat diarrhea associated with E. coli by hindering bacteria from latching on to cells in the throat, intestines and urinary tract. It can also purify the blood and stimulate the functions of the gallbladder.

Oregon grape root can be purchased through capsules, tinctures, ointments or tablets. If you are looking to treat a skin issue, ointments with ten percent Oregon grape extract are best used three times per day by applying it to the affected area.

There are some side effects that potential users should be made aware of. Since this herb contains berberine, it can have a sedating effect. It can also decrease blood sugar levels within the body, so those with diabetes should take note. Do not treat diarrhea via Oregon grape root tinctures as they may cause stomach irritation. Women who are pregnant should not take oral doses of this herb. Finally, although Oregon grape root is very beneficial, long term use should be avoided. Do not take it more than three weeks at a time. Sporadic use is best.
