A new study at the Cardiovascular Research Center and Department of Physiology at Temple University School of Medicine has a theory why cardiovascular disease rates are so much lower in Japan.  In Japan, people eat rice (and usually brown rice) each and every day.  As it turns out, brown rice has a compound in it that seems to maintain low blood pressure and fight heart disease.

In addition to brown rice being good for the heart, it also provides B vitamins, fiber and selenium.  The Temple University researchers also found a layer of tissue surrounding grains of brown rice that stops a potentially harmful protein called angiotensin II.  If the body has too much angiotensin II, it can lead to heart problems.

Aniotensin II has been shown to constrict arteries and make the heart work harder.  Temple University researcher Dr. Eguchi stated, "Our research suggests that there is a potential ingredient in rice that may be a good starting point for looking into preventive medicine for cardiovascular diseases.  We hope to present an additional health benefit of consuming half-milled or brown rice (as opposed to white rice) as part of a regular diet."

The drugs that typically are distributed to block angiotensin II receptors have dangerous side effects.  As a result, this new discovery about brown rice is quite exciting.  However, it is important to note this beneficial layer of rice is located between rice’s white center and outer layer.  When white rice is made, this necessary subaleurone layer is taken off the brown rice. Half-milled rice, however, will still have this layer.  Also make sure that you avoid instant brown rice, as it doesn’t have the same minerals as regular brown rice.
