Barbara, a Natural Health On The Web newsletter subscriber asks:

What can I do to stop the burning pain of neuropathy, naturally, without drugs?

Thank you for writing in with your question Barbara. First, let's begin by defining the symptoms associated with Neuropathy.

Symptoms of the most common form of Peripheral neuropathy cause pain and numbness in the hands and feet. The burning pain you're referring to is known as neuropathic pain, which is characterized by tingling or burning.

Diabetes is a common cause of Peripheral neuropathy. Among some other causes are alcoholism, infections, metabolic problems, traumatic injuries, vitamin deficiencies, toxins and even certain medications.

A study that was published in the Annals of Pharmacotherapy December, 2001 concluded that the use of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, including Cipro were connected with adverse effects that involved the peripheral nervous system. The side effects included tingling, numbness, burning pain, twitching, or spasms.

Here are some natural steps you can take for prevention and treatment of Peripheral neuropathy:

If you're currently taking medications it's time to have a closer look at what's in your medicine cabinet. There are many drugs that are associated with developing this condition some of which include heart or blood pressure medications, cancer drugs, antibiotics, anticonvulsants and HIV drugs. By no means is this a complete list so it's imperative you check with your healthcare practitioner.

Increase your intake of B vitamins, especially Vitamins B1 and B12. Vitamin deficiencies are a contributing factor for developing this condition, especially these B vitamins. Adequate levels of B vitamins in the blood stream assist in repairing nerve damage.

Get moving, slowly. Begin engaging in a very mild exercise routine such as walking, swimming and even rebounding. These exercises have shown to be effective in helping this condition.

Learn the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). This is the process developed by pioneer Gary Craig, which consists of stimulating well established energy meridian points on your body by tapping on them with your fingertips. You can learn how to properly use EFT and the many benefits it can provide by reading up on Gary Craig.

Studies have shown that Alpha-lipoic acid, which is a powerful antioxidant, can quickly and effectively reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms of the most common kind of diabetic neuropathy.

Magnesium is essential for proper nerve function. A deficiency in this magnificent mineral has been linked to peripheral neuropathy symptoms. Including an adequate amount of magnesium may help to eliminate symptoms.

Another alternative treatment is Acupuncture, which has been successfully used by some people to relieve discomfort associated with neuropathy.

I hope this information will shed some light on your question. I wish you the very best of health.

* Important notes: It is recommended that you seek the advice of a qualified healthcare practitioner prior to using any alternative therapies to treat Peripheral neuropathy. Any recommended doses are for those over age 18. Always check herb and vitamin use with your child’s health care practitioner prior to administering them.
