Gout - Gout 2006

Gout is a disturbance of uric-acid metabolism occurring mostly in males. It is signalized by painful inflammation of the joints, especially of the feet and hands, and arthritic attacks resulting from elevated levels of uric acid in the blood and the deposition of urate crystals around the joints. This condition can become chronic and lead to deposits of hard growths of uric acid in and around the joints, decreased kidney function, kidney stones and even deformity.

Gout attacks affect approximately one million people in the United States but it is nine times more common in men than in women. Attacks are prevalent in males after puberty, and usually do not surface after age 75. In women, gout attacks usually occur after menopause.

This condition is many times related to a genetic abnormality in the body's capability to process uric acid. Uric acid is a breakdown product of purines, which are part of many foods we eat. A management malfunction of uric acid in the body can result in attacks of painful arthritis, which is also called a gout attack. Other repercussions include kidney stones and possibly kidney failure.

Some evidence suggests that gout is the result of excessive amounts of alcohol, protein, heavy foods, coffee and soft drinks in your diet. Foods such as these cause an elevation in uric acid levels. Other foods that increase uric acid levels are anchovies, asparagus, legumes, mushrooms, meat and shellfish. Logically, reducing your intake of these foods is very often successful in reducing or eliminating gout.

There are also other natural methods to treating gout including supplementation to prevent damage from free radicals that can intensify gouty problems. Here's my list of recommendations for gout relief:

B complex: 50 mg one to three times daily of the complete B complex, plus 500 mg of pantothenic acid (B5) in divided doses to assist the body's conversion of uric acid into innocuous compounds.

Bromelain: 500 mg twice daily - an enzyme that comes from pineapple, is described as "nature’s anti-inflammatory medicine".

Fish oil: A high quality Fish oil such as Carlson's fish and Cod Liver Oil (liquid) reduces the chances of inflammation in the joints. Take one tablespoon 2x daily.

L-glutamine: 500 mg four times daily on an empty stomach acts as an antacid.

L-glutathione: 500 mg twice daily on an empty stomach will increase renal cleansing of uric acid.

L-Methionine: 250 mg twice daily on an empty stomach will detoxify purines.

Magnesium Citrate: 400 mg three times a day to relieve pain.

Shark cartilage: 3-6 capsules/day can make the pain disappear.

Tissue salts: two tablets of 6X Silica three times a day prevents the formation of uric acid crystals.

Vitamin C: 1,000 mg per hour at the very outset of a gout attack then reduce to 500-3,000 mg daily for maintenance. Vitamin C helps lower serum uric acid levels.

"Super Green Formula" by Garden of Life: Take one heaping scoop in 8 ounces of pure water daily, which contains highly concentrated "greens" like chlorella, spirulina, wheat grass juice and barley grass juice, which works to alkalinize the body.
