Foodborne Illness

Foodborne illnesses are very common today and easy to contract. This type of condition develops when you consume food that contains harmful toxins, chemicals or bacteria. This is a condition that is more commonly referred to as food poisoning. Foodborne illnesses cause 76 million cases of illness and 5,000 deaths per year in the United States alone, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. These numbers are almost certainly not accurate since most people mistake symptoms of Foodborne illnesses for simple upset stomach or the flu.

There are many different types of Foodborne illnesses depending on what toxins or chemicals were the causes. The most commonly known type is salmonella poisoning, which everyone has heard of. Salmonella is part of the natural intestinal flora of many animals and therefore can be easy to contract or overlook during the preparation of many different meats. This type of bacteria can be easily transmitted through food supply, cross contamination of the hands touching the food and the surfaces of knives and tabletops etc. Although in the past salmonella poisoning has always been related to chicken, studies have shown that eggs cause the majority of Foodborne cases in relation to salmonella.

Foodborne illnesses are found to be most common on cruise ships, restaurants that serve buffets and simply carelessness in the kitchen. All it takes is cross contamination of bacteria from one food to another for a large group of people to be ill. If you have ever contracted a Foodborne illness in the past we have some natural solutions to help eliminate these toxins quickly from your system.

  • Charcoal tablets are extremely essential for anyone suffering from food poisoning of any kind. It is recommended to take 5 tablets at the first signs of illness and again 6 hours later. These charcoal tablets remove toxic substances from the colon and bloodstream.
  • Garlic, known as the natural antibiotic, is also a great detoxifying agent. Taking 2 garlic capsules, three times a day can help destroy bacteria in the colon. I recommend the brand Kyolic by Wakunaga of America, which is an odorless organic garlic supplement.
  • Potassium is a very important supplement in these cases because it helps restore the natural and proper electrolyte balance in your system.
  • Vitamin C with bioflavonoids is yet another detoxifier and when taken in 8,000 mg per day in divided doses can destroy any toxins or bacteria in the body.
  • The herb goldenseal also acts as a natural antibiotic to eliminate bacteria in the colon. However, goldenseal should not be taken for more than one week at a time and should not be used by pregnant women.
  • For severe cases of poisoning it may be beneficial to induce vomiting so the toxin can be eliminated from the body.
If you have found that you are either prone to Foodborne illnesses or have experienced it in the past, it is a good idea to visit a naturopathic professional and get their advice on which supplements can be used simultaneously and how to get the best results possible.
