Crohn's Disease - Crohn's Disease 2006

Crohn’s disease is a disorder that causes inflammation of the digestive tract, which is also referred to as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. While Crohn’s disease can affect any area of the GI tract, the most common area that is affected is the ileum, which is the lower part of the small intestine. The inflammation extends deep into the lining of the affected organ and can result in pain and can frequent bowel movements or diarrhea.

Crohn’s disease can often be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis affects the top layer of the lining of the large intestine. Crohn’s disease affects all layers of the intestine.

Crohn’s disease affects men and women equally and seems to have genetic link. One out of every five people with Crohn’s disease has a blood relative with some form of inflammatory bowel disease. Most people affected are between the ages of 20 and 30 but any person in any age group can be affected. Crohn’s disease may also be referred to as ileitis or enteritis.

There currently is no scientifically proven cause of the disease, only theories.

The most common symptoms of Crohn’s disease are abdominal pain, and diarrhea but other symptoms such as rectal bleeding, weight loss, arthritis, skin problems, and fever may also occur. In children with Crohn’s disease, delayed development and stunted growth can result.

Following diagnosis, medical doctors will try to have you believe that the best way to treat Crohn’s disease is with anti-inflammation drugs like sulfasalazine, cortisone or steroids, immune system suppressors like azathioprine or antibiotics.

The only good these will do is fatten the purse of the company producing them. Instead, try some safe, natural alternatives such as:

Aloe Vera – Aloe soothes and heals the lining of the digestive tract. I recommend taking ¼ to ½ cup three times daily.

L-Glutamine – An amino acid that is beneficial for the intestinal cells and preserves the villi.

Lactobacilli – Helps improve digestive health and restores intestinal flora. “Kyo-Dophilus” from Wakunaga of America is a high-quality probiotic supplement.

Omega-3 fatty acids – These also have anti-inflammatory properties and promote good health. Some great sources include: salmon, herring, mackerel, albacore tuna, and sardines. The supplement forms are great as well. I personally use Carlson’s liquid fish and cod liver oil, which I’ve found to be high quality. Take at least one tablespoon daily.

Super Greens Formula – Contains chlorella, spirulina and a host of other nutrients that promote digestive health. A high-quality whole food supplement is the “Super Green Formula” by Garden of Life.

A High-Potency Multivitamin – Provides a base of nutrients to prevent deficiencies that are common with Crohn’s disease.

Garlic – Fights free radicals associated with Crohn's. Use the brand “Kyolic” by Wakunaga of America, which is an odorless organic garlic supplement.

Vitamin D - This is always a good choice because people with active inflammation, which is caused by Crohn’s disease, poorly absorb vitamin D. The best source is natural sunlight but you can also supplement with vitamin D as well.

Zinc - Because zinc is lost in the stool, deficiencies can occur in people with Crohn's disease who have chronic diarrhea. Zinc plays a key role in several important functions in body. These include the transporting of vitamin A, the healing of wounds and more than 80 enzyme actions.

Marshmallow and Slippery Elm – Both have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. Aside from that, they can also soothe pain and irritation. Marshmallow and slippery elm can be taken as a tea or in supplement form.

Avoid the following as these products irritate the gastrointestinal system and make symptoms worse:

  • Dairy products

  • Saturated fats

  • Spicy foods

  • Artificial sweeteners

  • White flour

  • Refined sugars

  • Alcohol

  • Caffeine
