Anything that you can do to improve the health of your brain has to be valued.  After all, your brain is responsible for keeping you smart and reaching your peak potential.  Be sure to make healthy choices in your life that support your brain’s functionality.

Here are 5 tips for keeping your brain sharp.

  1. Get plenty of exercise

Anyone who has read my articles knows that I am always extolling the value of exercise.  Exercise can also improve the functioning of your brain.  In fact, some new studies have shown that regular exercise can delay age related memory problems.  If you have mild impairment, exercise can also improve your brain.

  2. Play Games and Learn Hobbies

So you thought that games were a waste of time?  This isn’t true when it comes to your brain.  Doing crossword puzzles or playing word games like Scrabble can improve your brainpower.  If you can take time to learn a new hobby, by all means to do.  When you keep your brain active, it produces new connections that keep you sharp.

  3. Avoid Smoking

Studies show that smokers are twice as likely to get Alzheimer’s disease! Enough said.

  4. Improve Your Diet

There is almost always room for improvement when it comes to diet.  Not only can eating a healthy diet manage your weight, it can also improve your brain’s health. Be sure to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, the more colorful the better! Also be sure to eat foods with antioxidants.

Blueberries, in particular, are an all-star when it comes to improving your memory. Blueberries can also protect the brain from oxidative stress, which is believed to contribute to negative conditions like dementia. Studies show that older rats who are fed blueberries exhibit the same mental functionality as younger rats.

Another major improvement that you can make in your diet is to eat more foods with Omega-3 fatty acids.  Tuna, sardines and mackerel have fats that are good for your brain.

  5. Sleep Well

Many people don’t get enough sleep all night and it can take a huge toll on their cognitive ability. Be sure that you are getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night. You will find that you are in a better mood, more creative and can think more clearly.
