Immune System - Immune System 2007

While conventional medicine combats disease through the use of drugs, surgery and other therapies, the immune system's level of functioning is what enables a person to attain a true level of optimal health.

The immune system plays a huge role in helping the body heal and prevent itself from every single insult that that body is exposed to.

When the immune system becomes weakened, risk of nearly every type of illness becomes increased. A weakened immune system can result in symptoms such as inflammation, slow wound healing, repeated infections, chronic diarrhea, candidiasis and fatigue.

Research indicates that people generally suffer from two colds each year. That number tends to double or triple in people with weakened immune systems. The key to keeping the immune system strong and healthy is to first understand exactly how it works and understand the role it plays in achieving optimal health.

Simply put, the immune system responsibilities are to identify the things that naturally belong in the body as well as those which are foreign or harmful and destroy them. It does this in two ways. The first is called cell-mediated immunity and the other is called humoral immunity. In cell-mediated immunity, cancerous cells, viruses and microorganisms like fungi and bacteria are destroyed by white blood cells called T lymphocytes. In humoral immunity, special proteins called antibodies either damage invasive cells or signal white blood cells to do so.

In either case, it is the white blood cells that are instrumental in immune function. For that reason, they are considered the body's first line of defense.

The lymphatic system also plays an important role of immunity. This system of organs includes the thymus, the tonsils, the spleen and lymph which is fluid that bathes the cells in the body. Operating at the cellular level, the lymphatic system provides a continuous cleansing process and removes toxins and other debris from tissues.

While the level, complexity and method in which the immune system works is truly fascinating, it can only do so if it is cared for properly. Many things can cause the immune system to become weakened. These include pollutants in the environment, the overuse of drugs or alcohol, many additives present in certain foods and stress. Getting all the right nutrients, providing the right environment and avoiding things that tend to depress the immune system are the keys to keeping it healthy and preventing it from becoming weakened.

The regimen outlined below is designed to strengthen the immune system safely & naturally:

First, you should take notice to whatever factors may be compromising your immune system and take steps to rectify them.

The diet should include garlic, chlorella, and pearl barley as all three contain a trace element called germanium, which has beneficial effect on the immune system.

Fresh fruits and vegetables as well as seeds, grains, nuts and other high fiber foods are important.

Consume “green” drinks on a daily basis.

Animal products, soda, sugar and processed foods should be avoided.

A fasting program is good once a month for helping the body rid itself of toxins.

Avoid overeating.

Do not smoke or consume beverages that contain alcohol or caffeine.

Avoid stress and exercise regularly.

Be sure to get sufficient sleep each night.

The following supplements are considered to be some of the most beneficial in promoting proper immune function:

Vitamin A (10,000 IU daily) - Anti-infection vitamin that is needed for proper immune function.

Vitamin C with bioflavonoids (5,000 - 20,000 mg daily in divided doses) - Perhaps the single most important vitamin for the immune system. Has a direct effect on bacteria and viruses and aids the production of lymphocytes. Ultimately will decrease likelihood of infection.

Vitamin E (200 IU daily) - Interacts with vitamins A & C and the mineral selenium providing a primary antioxidant effect and destroying free radicals.

Beta-1,3 glucan (take as directed on label) - Holds potent immune-stimulating properties and has been shown to kill tumor cells.

Zinc (50-80 mg daily) - Boosts immune response and promotes wound healing.

Acetyl-L-carnitine (take as directed on label) - Carries energy and shields the cell membrane.

Acidophilus (take as directed on label) - Restores "friendly" bacteria to the intestinal tract.

Kelp (2,000 - 3,000 mg daily) Supplies a balance of minerals needed for proper immune function.

Garlic (2 capsules 3 times daily) - Stimulates the immune system.

Essential fatty acids (take as directed on label) - Needed for healthy immune function.

* Important notes: The recommended doses are for those over age 18 unless otherwise stated. Always check herb and vitamin use with your child’s health care practitioner prior to administering them.
