A Holistic Approach to Treating And Preventing A Common Skin Disorder

By Consumer Health Advocate, Frank Mangano

Commonly referred to as simply seborrhea, seborrheic dermatitis is a condition characterized by scaly patches of skin that result from a disorder of the oil secreting (sebaceous) glands. While the chest, face and scalp are the areas most affected by this condition, seborrhea can appear on other parts of the body as well. In some cases, itchiness may occur or it may not.

Skin affected by seborrhea may be yellowish and/or greasy or flaky and dry. As the condition progresses, the scaly bumps may eventually integrate to form large patches or plaques. While this condition can occur at any time in one's life, it most often occurs during middle age or infancy (cradle cap).

The exact cause of cradle cap remains unknown, but many experts feel it may be linked to nutritional deficiencies or the effect of a yeast organism called Pityrosporum ovale, which usually inhabits the hair follicles. Other contributing factors include heredity, climate, oily skin, Parkinson's disease, obesity, infrequent shampooing, AIDS, psoriasis, acne, rosacea and in cases of adult seborrheic dermatitis, stress and anxiety play a role.

Consume a diet containing 50 to 75 percent raw foods and eliminate raw egg whites, dairy products, white flour, fried foods, refined sugars and chocolate.

The supplemental regimen outlined below includes a holistic approach to treating & preventing seborrhea:

Essential Fatty Acids (take as directed on label) - Essential for numerous skin disorders and contains needed linoleic acid. Carlson's liquid fish oil is one of the best sources of Omega-3. I also like Nordic Naturals.

Zinc (50 mg daily) - Important for the healing process and increases immunity.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) (take as directed on label) - Holds healing and nutritional properties for the skin.

Grape Seed Extract (take as directed on label) - Potent antioxidant that helps the skin resist disease.

Vitamin A and E (Up to 50,000 IU of Vitamin A and up to 800 IU of Vitamin E on a daily basis) - Are beneficial to skin health.

Vitamin B Complex and Biotin (take as directed on label) - B vitamins are needed for healing and repairing and Biotin deficiency has been linked to seborrhea.

Aloe Vera Juice, Tea Tree Oil and Calendula Cream - Effective in loosening the scales and soothing the skin when applied topically.
