Reishi Mushroom  - The Spiritual Mushroom with Impressive Health-Promoting Powers

By Consumer Health Advocate, Frank Mangano

Known scientifically as Ganoderma lucidum, reishi mushrooms can be found growing wild on decaying logs and tree stumps in China. The history of reishi mushrooms being used medicinally is quite long and has been popular for at least 2,000 years in the Far East.

In China and Japan, these mushrooms have been a recommendation among experts as a health tonic and as folk medicine for liver problems, asthma, cancer, heart conditions, arthritis and high blood pressure.

Within reishi mushrooms are polysaccharide compounds, which have been shown to aid the body in combating cancerous tumors as well stimulating the immune system to combat infections and viruses. Studies on mice have shown reishi mushrooms to be very effective in fighting cancerous tumors.

Triterpenes can also be found in reishi mushrooms. These substances have been shown to be effective in lowering blood pressure and improving circulation. Sterols, which may influence the hormonal system, can be found in reishi mushrooms as well as natural antihistamines, which reduce allergic reactions and inflammation in the body. In recent years, antioxidant properties have been identified in reishi mushrooms. These enzymes counteract the damaging effects caused by free radicals on cells and human tissue.

Numerous clinical studies in Asia indicate that reishi mushrooms are beneficial in treating conditions such as hepatitis, asthma, and heart disease. They are a recommendation among many as a treatment for lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, and increasing white blood cell count. Studies have shown Reishi mushrooms to have a calming effect on the central nervous system..

I've long been a fan of the anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant effects of reishi mushrooms. What you may not have known is that they also increase vital energy, strengthen tendons and bones and are good for the complexion.

You can find these spiritual mushrooms (as they are referred to in Asia) in supplement form including dried and as powder, tincture, capsule and extract form.

* Important note: Reishi mushrooms may increase the effects of anticoagulant medications including aspirin. It is recommended that you seek the advice of a qualified healthcare practitioner prior to using reishi mushrooms or any alternative therapies. The recommended doses are for those over age 18 unless otherwise stated. Always check herb and vitamin use with your child’s health care practitioner prior to administering them.
