For many years, goldenseal has been hailed by many as the medicinal herb capable of curing just about anything as it can be used in a wide variety of medicinal applications. This bitter herb is most effective when taken internally to promote digestion. Goldenseal in especially beneficial for the treatment of inflammation and infection of the mucous membranes lining the upper respiratory tract as well as the digestive and genitourinary tract. The herb has strong anti-bacterial properties which are effective in combating amoebic infection. Goldenseal has also been shown to enhance function of the liver, kidneys, and lungs. The astringent herb can also be used as an application to keep bleeding under control. For this reason many experts recommend goldenseal as an alternative treatment for excessive and painful menstruation or postpartum hemorrhage. Antiseptic, diuretic, and mild laxative characteristics are all part of goldenseal making it a great choice as an internal body cleanser. It is also a recommendation among many for the treatment of peptic ulcers and when applied externally as rhizome bark powder or tincture, it can be beneficial in treating gum disease, vaginal infection, inflammations of the ear, eczema, impetigo and conjunctivitis. The diuretic and anti-inflammatory effects of goldenseal can also help lower blood pressure. I personally recommend goldenseal as an effective alternative treatment for colds, flu, sore throat, tonsillitis, typhoid fever, gonorrhea, and syphilis. Goldenseal also works extremely well when taken with Echinacea. This powerful combination is very effective in combating bacterial and viral infections. The rootstock of goldenseal, which is where the medicinal properties can be found can be used in decoction, liquid extract, tablet, and tincture. I personally recommend an alcohol-free extract form. * Important note: Pregnant or nursing women should not use Goldenseal. Do not use for prolong periods. The recommended doses are for those over age 18. Always check herb and vitamin use with your child’s health care practitioner prior to administering them.
